Collegiate Shag is a lively and energetic swing dance that originated in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. With its characteristic bounce, quick footwork and playful partner dynamics, Shag brings energy to any dance floor. It is usually danced in closed position and thrives on rhythm, groove – and a dash of humour. It is usually danced to faster swing tunes in the range of 180 – 250 BPM. It also has a double-time rhythm of ‘slow slow quick quick’.
Collegiate Shag developed during the so-called ‘Swing Era’ boom in the United States. It was particularly popular with students, who developed it further with enthusiasm and creativity, hence the name ‘Collegiate’ Shag.
Over the years, Shag faded into the background, but was rediscovered in the 1980s and 90s thanks to the swing revival movement and is now enjoying increasing popularity worldwide – not least because of its joie de vivre and the ability to dance even the fastest music with ease.
